Social media has fundamentally changed our forms of communication. It has made it possible to reach audiences in larger numbers and in less time than ever before.  The dramatic growth in digital marketing in recent years has made it an increasingly popular career choice. Here is a list of skills that are essential to success.

Content creation

Writing and editing is a requirement for any job in digital marketing. Building a list of published works is a good way to set yourself apart from the competition when you are first starting out. Employers often ask to see writing samples. Today’s digital world is full of websites about every topic you could possibly think of. Starting a blog about a cause or niche topic is also a good way to build your brand as well.

Social media marketing

Specialization and volume are the most effective methods for any social media strategy. When you are trying to build a brand, tweeting about events and issues relevant to your field is a great way to attract followers. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn are the most commonly used platforms for social media campaigns. Always remember, marketing is about connecting with people.

Knowledge of current events and issues

It is essential for any digital marketer to have a good sense of what is going on in the world. Audiences could immediately sense when you do not understand an issue. Today’s audiences are educated and often search for content on subjects they already have a good grasp of. Find out who are the key influencers in your field and engage with them.

Graphic design and other technical skills

Digital media is primarily a visual medium. Words do not jump off the screen like images do. Having at least some working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud programs is a definite asset, particularly Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Adobe has some excellent video tutorials on its websites.  SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Google Analytics, HTML/CSS and even Javascript are increasingly in demand. Nothing is essential but the more you could do the better.
